What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin type A is a purified substance derived from a bacteria, a neurotoxin protein. It has been available and in use medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically to treat wrinkles. There are several brands available including (Botox, Azzalure, Bocouture, Dysport).
Botox works by preventing signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles, effectively paralysing them, weakening the muscle such that it cannot contract and therefore reduces unwanted facial wrinkles, resulting in smoother skin.
Results from treatment can be evident from 3 – 5 days but can take up to two weeks before full effect is seen. Our practitioner will undertake a full patient assessment, medical history and discuss your individual needs to ascertain best treatment options. Results may vary but typically, 3 – 5 months duration is expected and full after care service is available.
Are there any side effects?
As with any clinical procedure, side effects may occur, and again, are individual. Injections with botulinum toxin are generally well tolerated and as a result, adverse events are generally rare. However, side effects and complications may occur and the following to be aware of include, bruising and pain at site of injection, redness and swelling, and headache. These should resolve within a few days.
